Providing insight on the intersection of contemporary issues and theology, based on a Biblical Christian Worldview.

A rich man told his pastor, “I’d give money, but I love it too much.”

The pastor replied, “Good! The Bible says to love your enemies!”

Theology on the Lighter Side – Money is an idol that can draw us away from God. My personal testimony included a large dose of pride over money until I lost it all over a failed business. And it was that financial failure that got me to my knees in recognition that there was a Creator who I did not know, and yet needed His support to carry on. We all have areas of our lives that change when we become born-again … part of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in our lives. For me, a major change was the transfer of my dependence on the accumulation of wealth to a faith and trust that God will provide.

Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have ... - Hebrews 13:5a

The fundamentals of contentment are eternal in nature, not temporal in the short time we have on this old earth.

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. - 1 Timothy 6:10a

Much of sin can be traced back to pride and the underlying engine of pride is money and what it brings in the way of idols that clutter our lives and, like a drug, drive us toward always needing more.

You cannot serve God and money. - Matthew 6:24b

For most of us, we must daily choose the criteria by which the world judges us, or choose the measuring rod that God uses to judge us.

He who loves money will not be satisfied with money ... - Ecclesiastes 5:10a

Those who love money and the prestige it brings never seem to be satisfied. Those who focus on the Lord, regardless of their wealth or stature, should always be satisfied.

And he said to them, “one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” - Luke 12:15b

When we are focused on comparing our possessions with our neighbors, we can lose sight of the true value of horizontal friendships and our vertical faith.

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal ... For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. - Matthew 6:19-21

When we are lying on our deathbed, we will not be wishing we spent more time making money. Those treasures are fleeting, but a relationship with God, through Christ, is eternal.

And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven." - Matthew 19:23

There are those who God has given the gift of humility in the area of finances … but they are few and far between. Money brings power, and power corrupts.
