Theology on the Lighter Side – Why did the pastor open a bakery? – Because he wanted to serve daily bread!
If you are a pastor or Sunday School teacher, what is your primary goal for those who have been put in your charge?
Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. - Acts 20:28
Note the importance of “careful attention to yourselves” … How many pastors, deacons, elders, and teachers have fallen in public disgrace in the recent past? One cannot minister to others if they themselves are wrapped up in unrepentant sin.
Paying attention to “all the flock” under your care is the next step. That includes the 20% who do all the work and pay the bills, as well as those who come on Sundays. It includes the ones who are less consistent in their faith-walk and are difficult to love.
It is “the Holy Spirit” that has called you to be responsible for the care of all members and attenders within your sphere of influence as a “church of God.”
We know from Scripture that it is both a blessing and a weighty responsibility to take on a leadership role in a Biblical Christian church.
Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. - James 3:1
This responsibility is not just a caring spirit on Sunday mornings and perhaps Wednesday nights. It is “daily bread.” As Christian teachers, you are the baker for your flock.
Each of us are being held accountable for presenting sound theology that is valuable, both on this earth and, more importantly, in the eternal life to follow. We are to plant and water seeds of spiritual fruit, praying that God will cause the growth (1 Corinthians 3:7). To do that well is to receive the blessing, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” To miss the mark is to be judged with “greater strictness.”
