Providing straightforward analysis on the intersection of contemporary issues and theology, based on a Biblical Christian Worldview.

Did Jesus REALLY say that?

This is a classic example of taking verses out of context and building false theology around a faulty assumption. The Bible is a unified document that must be looked at submissively with the understanding that God’s ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9), and He is omniscient. So when something appears out of balance, we must have faith that the Lord has our best interests at heart. If clarity does not come in this life, it will come in the next at the feet of the One who wrote the Book.

In the case of this very simple example, it would initially seem Jesus is suggesting universal salvation for all of mankind. In isolation, it suggests that Jesus came into the world, not to judge our sins, but to die on the cross so that everyone will go to Heaven. However, what is important is to view this verse in its context. The verse that immediately follows provides clarity that fits the rest of Scripture.

John 12:47-48 - If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.

So from verse 48 we understand that it is a matter of timing. Jesus will be our judge on the “last day.”

Matthew 25:32-46 - “Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world' ... Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.'"
