We are Superheroes

Let your own hurts or weaknesses remind you that everyone around you is in a similar boat. Let God's grace flow through you and bless the life of someone else.

Scripture

Our verse for today comes from Ephesians 6:10, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.”

Background

In case you didn’t know it, I am a superhero. Now, I’m not the kind who wears a cape or shoots webs, and you definitely won’t catch me wearing tights with red underwear over them. Nonetheless, I am a superhero. My powers just don’t happen to be the type found in comic books or action movies. I simply have the amazing ability to ease pain and lift up spirits. Yes, with just the touch of my hand or the tone of my voice or the expression in my eyes, I can actually ease the physical pain or the emotional distress of people. It sounds impossible, I know, but I have seen it happen. And so has my wife. In fact, she is most often the recipient of this healing. At first, I didn’t believe what she would tell me, that hugging her or kissing her forehead actually took away some of the hurt that she was feeling. I couldn’t see the power contained in how I looked at her or whether I sought her out to console her. But she kept assuring me that I was indeed helping her, that my arms made her feel better and my words relieved her anxiety. And then I began to see the effects on my children. Tears were stopped and moods were brightened, all with just a touch or a smile from their dad.

Application

But these powers are not exclusive to me. I did not stumble upon them in a science lab or bring them with me from another planet. You possess them as well. You are a superhero, too. You can heal and restore within your very own home just as readily as I can in mine. You can even wear a cape if you’d like. But it doesn’t have to stop there. Our powers are not effective only on our family members. Every person we pass by is subject to our healing touch and soothing voice. We just have to slide down the bat pole or change in a phone booth to step out of ourselves. All of us have a giant “S” on our chest, but unless we choose to use the power it signifies, we’re as useful as Clark Kent in a boxing match. God’s Spirit is powerful, but it must be unleashed. Don’t miss another opportunity to be a superhero. There’s a lot of hurt out there, and we know just the One who can take care of it.

Charge

As we seek Him today, let your own hurts or weaknesses remind you that everyone around you is in a similar boat. Let God’s grace flow through you and bless the life of someone else.
