The Problem Is Spiritual, Not Political

Christ is the solution to all of life's challenges.

Christ is the solution to all of life's challenges.

There are many people in American Society who are dissatisfied with the direction our country is taking.  They are concerned about the economy and how deeply polarized we have become.  They are troubled by the level of distrust for our government and our elections.  Many believe that electing a different president from a different political party will solve the problem.  Unfortunately, many minimize the problem as being merely political and fail to realize that our problem is very much a spiritual problem.  This isn’t just Democrats against Republicans or conservatives against liberals.  This is good vs evil.

So many want to frame our societal problems as primarily or solely political.  The polls indicate that a great discontent is very prevalent among the masses.  In the last two years, dissatisfaction for the direction America is taking has dipped anywhere between 60% and 80%.  There has been a very disturbing trend toward distrust among Americans for their government and distrust toward each other.

The lack of trust in the government to solve the problems of drug addiction, of unethical behavior among politicians, of rising costs for healthcare and careless spending of the American taxpayers’ monies is bipartisan.  Unfortunately, because we are so polarized politically, we oversimplify the solution to these problems and believe that electing either a Republican or a Democrat will certainly solve them.

America cannot become great again until America understands that our problems are not primarily political; our problems are overwhelmingly spiritual.  Alex de Toqueville came to America to discover the source for her greatness and then he wrote a book, Democracy in America:  “I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors and her ample rivers—and it was not there. . . . . in her fertile fields and boundless forests—and it was not there. . . . .in her rich mines and her vast world commerce—and it was not there. . . . in her democratic Congress and her matchless Constitution—and it was not there.  Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power.  America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, she will cease to be great.”

The Apostle John wrote to his readers:  “We know that we are of God, and the whole world is under the sway of the evil one.” (1 John 5:19)  There are many places in scripture that indicate that Satan has some measure of control in this world.  We know that the “god of this age” blinds the “minds of the unbelievers to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:4)

The Russian philosopher and author, Alexander Solzhenitsen, offers an explanation for why nations are overcome by corruption and eventually succumb to demise and destruction:  “More than half a century ago, while I was still a child, I recall hearing a number of older people offer the following explanation for the great disasters that had befallen Russia: Men have forgotten God; that’s why all this has happened.”

Our problems are not so much that we have elected a Democrat or a Republican.  Our problems are not so much political but very much spiritual.  Our problem is that we have forgotten God!

The great hope of those who have not been blinded from “seeing the light of the gospel” is the promise of Christ that he will return again and set all things right and to that we say:  “Come, Lord Jesus.”  (Revelation 22:20)
