Theology on the Lighter Side – Why are there no WiFi signals in hell? – Because there’s no connection to the Lord!
Driving with our family and playing a game of riddles, my nine-year old grandson made the comment this week that “we should not make jokes about Bible stuff.” I choose to let his comment go unchallenged as it reflected a growing Christian maturity that I did not want to blunt. However, I did reflect on his point, given our daily “Lighter Side” posts. It is certainly true that God’s Word is to be taken seriously, and, there is a risk that making jokes such as the one above detracts or habituates one from the horrific reality of an eternity separated from our Lord and Savior.
However, God did create man in His image and humor is a fundamental part of our coping mechanism while we remain on earth. On the other hand, there is a stark difference between the jokes we may share on earth and the joy we will experience in Heaven. Further, it is important to have a filter on what we joke about and what we don’t.
Perhaps these “Lighter Side” posts should be curtailed. But, for now, I offer them through the lens of Paul’s comment to the Corinthians when he said …
1 Corinthians 9:22 – To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.
Sometimes the arrow of humor can hit the heart when speeches such as “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” simply bounce off.
