A Biblical Christian worldview perspective – There are some who believe that non-canonical books written about and contemporary to Christ should carry a weight similar to the Bible.
Some use verses taken out of context to attempt to make that point. For example, we recently had a Christian offer the thought that perhaps God was opening the Bible to “lost Scriptures” based on the following verse.
1 Corinthians 15:3-4 – For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.
His argument was that the written New Testament did not exist at the time the word “Scripture” was used by Paul. So there must be other secret writings that he was referring to.
However, the writers use of the term “lost Scriptures” is an oxymoron because the very definition of the term Scripture limits its content. Even Webster, defines the word as “the books of the Bible” and not non-canonical books contemporary to the first century.
The Bible is a closed canon (details here), and though there are numerous opportunities to learn about God through other extra-Biblical sources, one needs to filter all “revelations” through the lens of God’s word.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 – All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
