Why is God not on airplanes?

Because He says in the Bible, "lo I am with you always."

Theology on the Lighter Side – Why is God not on airplanes? – Because He says in the Bible, “lo I am with you always.”

Of course Jerry Clower is being a comedian in making that joke. Actually, God is with us no matter where we are, even cruising at 25,000 feet on an airplane. The full verse reads …

Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen. - Matthew 28:20

The Lord is with us in the easy times and in the hard times. He is there when we can feel His presence and when we can’t.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. - Psalm 23:4

Many years ago I was a cocky baby Christian feeling that God and I were tight. I had a peace that He was always nearby watching over me and had a false confidence that it was my relationship with Him that gave me that confidence, and not my own prideful heart.

My wife and I were flying somewhere, likely a trip from the east coast to Alaska, and we hit some turbulence. Fortunately, we had all been warned to buckle up, but no one expected what felt like a thousand-foot drop with no air under our wings. Judy and I looked at each other, feeling like we were headed to our graves. At the end of the flight, as we were walking off the plane, I engaged with one of the older stewardesses briefly, who told me in her twenty-five years of flying she had never experienced that significant a drop. The point of the story is the point of the title. When faced with what we considered our pending death, I was scared. I was not in a peaceful place, confident that as we approached our “valley of death,” God was in the plane with us. That day, I realized how shallow and prideful my faith really was.

Perhaps as we become more mature in Christ, we realize how much farther we have to go to be transformed into His image.

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. - 2 Corinthians 3:18
