Why is the United States the economic powerhouse that fuels the world’s economy? Why is the dollar the international currency of exchange? Why do our politics, trade policies, military engagements, and even societal, moral, and culture icons take center stage? Why do thousands of people spend millions of dollars trying to become Americans, either legally or illegally? Is it because God loves American more than other countries? Likely not.

So why have we maintained dominance over our friends and rivals for the last century?

If one types into Google the question, “How did America become the world’s greatest superpower” the answer is either a running history of our country’s achievements or a list consisting of stats like…. large land mass, smart business people, strong military, size of our economy, large population, strong innovation… yada, yada, yada. These are largely the results of a successful nation, not the underlying cause. And, of course, there is no mention of the supernatural having any input into the results. It’s all about the success of a select geographic group of mankind, stuffed between Canada and Mexico.

Then there is the question… why is America not in the Bible (for most theologians that choose not to turn Scripture into knots)? Are we headed the direction of the dodo bird? Looking at the world around us, perhaps from the perspective that we are at the beginning of the “labor pains”, this country had better disappear as a dominant force pretty quickly.

The Reason America is “Blessed”

For some reason, I believe God decided to use this country in this period of history to act as:

• A roadblock against worldwide military domination by those who would choose to enslave mankind. Today our enemies are China and Russia. Yesterday, it was Germany and Japan.
• An economic engine to drive the world’s standard of living.
• A target or sponsor to foster a worldwide drive toward technological achievements.

But Why

But why would God care if the world was dominated by a single dictator, or was mired in the quicksand of a lethargic standard of living, or devoid of the motivation to drive technological advancements? Perhaps one more question for the other side of the grave.

How Is America So Different

I believe in capitalism over socialism as a vehicle to motivate prideful, selfish sinners to excel so that there is wealth generated to spread around… which is something America is known for (its altruism… often for the internal warmth and outward appreciation it often elicits). If we were another Denmark, China would crush the free world and 99% of the earth would live in poverty. For some reason, that is not God’s will. From a selfish, sinful, worldly perspective, I am ok with that.
