Theology on the Lighter Side – Why don’t skeletons ever go to church? – Because they have no body to praise with!
What is your church service like? Large or small, energetic or laid back, Hell and brimstone or the social gospel, expository or topical preaching, frozen-chosen or running the aisles, adult Sunday School or mid-week Home Fellowships, KJV or The Message, rock band or choir, liturgies or stories, sprinkling or dunking, pews or chairs, ties and dresses or jeans and T-shirts, black lights or chandeliers, staff vestments or jeans, short sermons or long, and on and on it goes.
So, what is really important in the list above? Is it what makes you happy, what makes you feel good about yourself?
It is important we do have some- “body to praise [the Lord] with.” A place we feel comfortable to a degree. But it also needs to be a place where we are challenged to do better, to stretch ourselves in service to Him. Warm fuzzy sermons week after week that don’t touch our lives in an impactful way are a waste of time for the pastor who prepares them and the congregants who choose to show up that Sunday to listen to them. When pastors become too fearful that they are stepping on toes, apathy sets in and everybody loses.
If you are bored with your church, if it is not helping you along the path of sanctification, much less salvation, find a good Bible-believing church that speaks to you, comforts you, but also challenges you to draw closer and closer to God.
