Theology on the Lighter Side – Why do people say there are no tears in heaven? – Because God wipes them all away!
Certainly not humorous, but one of the few pictures in the Bible on the relationship between believers and God on the other side of the grave.
Revelation 7:17b – God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.
1 Corinthians 2:9 – But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him.”
Why does God need to wipe away our tears given the joy that must accompany our first sight of Heaven?
Some believe that we will not remember our time on earth (Isaiah 65:17, Revelation 21:1). Others see verses such as Revelation 6:9-10 as an indication that those in Heaven will remember, perhaps in current Heaven but not the final New Heaven. The same would be true of illustrations such as the story of Lazarus and the rich man (Luke 16:19-31). Still others believe that God, at the Judgment Seat of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:10), will show believers those times we have failed Him and then, perhaps, remove these events from our minds.
What is most important is that we need to recognize we have a finite (yet unknown to us) time on earth to do God’s will. As His Ambassadors, we need to be about His business.
