Theology on the Lighter Side – Why didn’t Jonah trust the ocean? – Because he knew there was something fishy about it!
It is thought that the book of Jonah was written between 793 and 758 BC. Jonah attempted to defy God when called to preach repentance to a people he considered his enemy. Instead, he boarded a ship to Tarshish, thinking he could escape God’s command. Of course, that was not possible and a raging storm resulted in him being thrown overboard by the crew who felt he was cursed. A fish (some say a whale) swallowed Jonah up and spit him out three days/nights later in the very place he was refusing to go. The story ends with Jonah and the Ninevites repenting.
The application for us today is obvious. We cannot escape God as He is omnipresent and omnipotent. Further, there are many times we prefer to make life decisions which we know are in opposition to God’s will. Often, He lets us proceed, and learn from our mistakes. However, all Christians who have the Holy Spirit in their hearts know of instances where our desires have been supernaturally blocked by a God who loves us and wants the best for us.
