Theology on the Lighter Side – Why did the man propose in church? – Because he wanted their love to be built on a solid rock!
Is the church really the “solid rock?”
Of course the verse that comes to mind is …
Matthew 16:18 - And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
And we can play hermeneutical pong (remember pong..?) on whether the “rock” was Peter or Jesus. But that’s not the point.
The point is that the word “church” can’t be trusted anymore in America. Most mainline denominations are so caught up in earthbound social justice reform that the “rock” has been made impotent and often indistinguishable from the world. This is why we use the term “Biblical Christian” rather than “Christian,” which has also lost its meaning.
When talking about the “solid rock,” perhaps better verses are …
Those that refer to God, the Father …
Psalm 18:2 - The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Isaiah 28:16 - therefore thus says the Lord GOD, “Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: ‘Whoever believes will not be in haste.’
2 Samuel 22:2 - He said, “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer.
Those that refer to Jesus, the Son …
Matthew 7:24 - “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
1 Corinthians 10:4 - and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.
Luke 6:47-48a - Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock.
