Theology on the Lighter Side – Why did the congregation bring sunglasses to church? – Because the preacher’s sermon was so enlightening!
There can be a tension between entertainment and spiritual enrichment. Preaching can be very engaging for a congregation, yet have little spiritual meat, and vice versa.
Pastors get only 52 Sundays in a year to make a point, so they need to use that time wisely. Too much entertainment value breeds a weak congregation. Too much of a focus on spiritual enrichment can be dry and left unheard by all but the faithful few. There is a balance and, since every pastor and member is different, often that equilibrium lands in a different place for each congregation.
Recognizing as a foundation that God is in control, pastors, elders, and staff must be constantly seeking that perfect balance between the fluff of entertainment, and the importance of engagement for the sake of teaching spiritual truths to the flock. In the past, congregants moved from church to church, looking for an illusive fit (sometimes for the wrong reasons). Sadly, today’s trend is to leave the institution of “church” entirely.
There is nothing unscriptural about looking around the community seeking the formula other churches have found to grow their congregations, as long as one’s foundation remains firmly based on a Biblical Christian worldview.
1 Corinthians 9:22 – To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.
