Theology on the Lighter Side – Why did the Christian banker never worry? – Because he stored up treasures in Heaven!
[As an FYI, you have no idea how many of these jokes I skip past because they are too corny.]
So the verse, of course, is …
Matthew 6:19-20 – Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
But it is the next verse that is key …
Matthew 6:21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
We live in a world, and for Americans, in a culture that promotes material success as an indicator of human value. Yet, God’s economy is very different that ours. He is looking for servants, not success stories.
My testimony includes bankruptcy, personal and business, some 35 years ago. It drove me to my knees and, for the first time in my life, I realized that human success was not the answer. Success is where your heart is, not your head, which fills with pride, greed, and other forms of sin. A word study of the Bible on the word “heart” is illuminating as to where the Lord puts His emphasis.
Matthew 5:8 – Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Psalm 51:10 – Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
From an eternal perspective, the most important verse on the heart is …
Romans 10:9-10 – If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
Salvation is ultimately not a response that comes from logic or thought (“the demons believed and shuddered”), even if God’s calling starts that way (apologetics). It is a heart change through faith, the result of which provides one with infinite “treasures in Heaven” (details here).
