Theology on the Lighter Side – The word “Emmanuel” in the Old Testament book of Isaiah refers to God protecting His people from those who would do them harm. In the New Testament in the book of Matthew, Emmanuel is Jesus Christ, the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy of the coming Messiah, actually living among His people. The term is used as a descriptor of one aspect of Jesus … God’s presence with humanity.
Our God is a God of love, comfort, and hope. Our God longs for a relationship with us, both here on earth and in eternity.
Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” - Deuteronomy 31:6
This is one of the many reasons why the Mormons, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and, sadly, many in the Jewish faith are wrong to hold the belief that God is unknowable. One should not accept theology that suggests God isolates Himself from mankind when there is so much evidence that He sent His Son to die on a cross for our sins, because He so loves His people.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. - John 3:16
Emmanuel—God with us.
