When the prophets of Baal failed to summon their god, Elijah mockingly suggested…

“Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened!”

“Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened!”

Theology on the Lighter Side – This comes from the book of 1 Kings …

And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, “Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.” - 1 Kings 18:27

This even comes when Elijah challenges the prophets of Baal. A bull was prepared for sacrifice on an altar, and his prophets “called on the name of Baal from morning until noon … dancing around the altar,” trying to set the wood on fire. After hours of attempts, nothing happened, so Elijah responded sarcastically with the words from the verse quoted above. This infuriated Baal’s prophets, and they began shouting and cutting themselves “all afternoon until the time of the evening sacrifice, but still there was no sound, no reply, no response.”

Elijah then called for large jars of water to be poured on the bull and the wood on the altar … three times. Following that, Elijah prayed to God and the “Lord flashed down from Heaven and burned up the young bull, and the wood.”

As Biblical Christians, we serve Elijah’s God.
