What have you been blind to?

Ask God to open your eyes to what you have been missing. Let Him reveal from your heart something that you have been blind to.

Ask God to open your eyes to what you have been missing. Let Him reveal from your heart something that you have been blind to.

Scripture

Our verse for today comes from Matthew 15:14, “Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.”

Background

We were at an auditorium recently, and I saw something that I had never seen before. Walking down the corridor was a woman using a white walking stick with the familiar red tip, a common sight for someone who is blind. That was not the amazing part. But following behind her, with his hand on her shoulder, was another blind person. So walking right past me was quite literally the blind leading the blind. That common phrase that gets used so often metaphorically to denote one clueless individual trying to direct another just as helpless, came to life in its most real sense before my very eyes. The second person was completely dependent on the first, and she couldn’t see what was directly in front of her. How the two of them managed, especially in the unfamiliar environment of that auditorium, is anybody’s guess. I watched them only for a moment as they maneuvered from one end of the hall to the other. Fortunately, there was no ditch for them to fall into, but there were plenty of people, walls, and obstructions for them to try and avoid.

Application

If I may state the obvious, blindness is tough. You’ve probably played the what-if game regarding which sense you’d least like to be without. For most, sight would probably top the list. So much of what we do necessitates being able to see. Spiritual sight is invaluable, too. Followers of Jesus need to be able to see things as He wants us to see them. Without His spiritual vision, our steps can lose their way. We can very easily become blind to what is right around us or going on within us. But that process is usually so gradual that we adapt to our new way of life. Our guard incrementally lowers, and eventually we are doing and saying very differently from how we once did, and how we know we should. We the blind are leading ourselves. And it’s hard to pray about or fix what you cannot see is broken. And so we must continually return to our Leader. We must ask Him to check our vision. He alone can remove the darkness.

Charge

As we seek Him today, ask God to open your eyes to what you have been missing. Let Him reveal from your heart something that you have been blind to.
