Theology on the Lighter Side – What did Jonah’s family say when he told them about his trip? – “Hmm… sounds a little fishy!”
Did Jonah really spend three days in the belly of a great fish (Jonah 1:7-17)? Of course, the story’s primary importance is to remind Christians that if God calls us to do something, we should not turn away from that responsibility. God has both the power and authority to ensure we follow His will.
However, it is interesting to note regarding the question of Jonah being an allegory or an actual event that, in Matthew 12:40-41, Jesus specifically refers to the incident, suggesting its authenticity.
Matthew 12:40-41 – For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.
