Theology on the Lighter Side – What did Adam say to his wife on Christmas? – It’s Christmas, Eve!
According to a recent survey by YouGov, approximately 87% of Americans celebrate Christmas annually. Of those who participate, 92% consider Christmas the most important holiday of the year. The top five activities Americans engage in during the season are:
- Listen to holiday music – 75%
- Watch a holiday movie – 72%
- Look at holiday lights – 70%
- Exchange presents – 70%
- Drink Hot Chocolate – 67%
- Decorate a Christmas Tree – 66%
Well down the list is “Attend a holiday religious service.” – 37%
If one can extrapolate the numbers … the birth of the Son of God, Jesus Christ, is celebrated in a purely secular way by at least 50% of Americans (87%-37%=50%). The percentage is likely much higher since many who attend church during the holidays are carnal Christians at best.
Though Christianity has declined for many years in America, over the last few it has stabilized at approximately 63% (while growing rapidly in other countries), according to Pew Research. Of course all self-described Christians may not align with a true definition of a Biblical Christian, one who fully accepts God’s grace alone through a personal relationship with Christ alone as the only path to Heaven.
As we are reminded of Adam and Eve on Christmas Eve, pray for those who are missing the eternal value of accepting the second Adam, Jesus Christ, as Savior and Lord.
Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual. The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven. As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of the dust, and as is the man of heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven. - 1 Corinthians 15:45-49
