Scripture
Our verse for today comes from John 12:42, “Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue.”
Background
How many times do you think you say the word “love” in one day? I hope you’ve never counted, though, for doing that seems to take away from the purity and sincerity of the expression, especially when it’s spoken to or about someone special. But we also talk plenty about how much we love our morning coffee, our favorite sports team, our new car, our weekends at the lake, and dozens of other wonderful distractions that make our lives more enjoyable and entertaining. It’s a blessing to be able to enjoy and appreciate so many different aspects of life, especially if that appreciation points you back to the One who gives us all good things. And fortunately, sharing a love for coffee or football or new cars or the water doesn’t land anyone in jail or cost them their life. In fact, sharing these loves with others generally increases your circle of camaraderie. Clubs, groups, and lasting friendships can grow from simply sharing one of these interests in common with someone else.
Application
But that is not always the case when it comes to our faith in Christ, is it? Sometimes sharing that particular love of our life can cost us something. Or has that not been the case for you? There were rulers in the time of Christ who believed in Him, but they dared not confess it. And John tells us why. They loved the praise of man more than the praise of God. If you’ve not been faced with being put out, whether from a group of some sort, an opportunity at work, or just the familiar high fives after an off-color joke, then maybe there’s something in the way of your love for Christ. Maybe all the perks that come from biting your tongue are satisfying you a little more than they should. Perhaps being one of the gang is something you need to take another look at. Fans will wear their team colors into the harshest of arenas to show their support, but will you say a word for the Savior who bore your sins and took the ultimate punishment? That praise from man tastes awfully good. Do you love it? Or will your love go on for eternity’s sake?
Charge
As we seek Him today, consider the loves in your life, and how they affect and motivate you throughout the day. Ask God to renew your love for Him and give you a new perspective on this world.
