A Biblical Christian worldview perspective – Do we really trust Jesus? Thomas, one of the twelve apostles, spent three years at the side of Christ, yet he is best known under the name, “Doubting Thomas” (details here). His famous verse in the Bible was:
John 20:25b – “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”
However, just before this time, as Jesus was nearing the end of His ministry, He told His disciples He needed to return to Jerusalem to bring Lazarus back to life, regardless of the danger. Thomas responded for the group by saying:
John 11:16 – So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
How can Thomas be so confident to accept death for his faith in Christ and be an eye witness to His miracles, including raising Lazarus from the dead, yet not trust his fellow apostles that Christ’s resurrection was real?
How can we, who possess the Holy Spirit within us, harbor fear in sharing the Good News with our friends, colleagues, and family, while simultaneously maintaining unwavering faith in the promise of eternal life in Heaven, bestowed upon us through the selfless love of our Lord?
Philippians 4:6-7 – do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
POSTSCRIPT: A good point from a reader…
Many who follow Christ struggle with doubt. Great people of God struggled too- John the Baptist. The most critical thing is to always wrestle with God through the Spirit to quell your doubts. As long as you connect to God with your doubts, He will sustain you. Just beware of doubts that lead you away from God.
