Scripture
Our verse for today comes from Romans 10:14, “But how can they call on Him to save them unless they believe in Him? And how can they believe in Him if they have never heard about Him? And how can they hear about Him unless someone tells them?”
Background
My wife is a nurse at a nearby hospital. And although she generally works only one night a week, during those twelve hours she encounters all types of patients who have had surgery. Recently she cared for a man who she said was eaten up inside with cancer, and he did not know it. The doctors and his family had not yet told him of his serious condition, even though the doctor said the patient would probably not survive to see the new year. When I heard that, I was hit with such a range of emotions. How could those involved know such important news and not tell the man? How would the man react when he finally hears of his sentence? How will he spend his last days on earth? How has he spent the time he has already been given? We have all heard sin compared to cancer, dooming each of us to death unless we are cured of its power. As followers of Jesus, we have received the healing that His blood provides, and we now know eternal life where death once reigned. But what about those who are walking around thinking they are healthy when they are actually condemned to eternal death?
Application
I know not all of us are gifted to be evangelists and preach the gospel to everyone we see. Some of us would tremble with terror if we were to approach someone and ask them if they knew Jesus. But each of us is gifted by God to be His messenger. Many of us are far worse parents than others, but that doesn’t relieve us of the responsibility to raise and care for our children. We don’t leave them to manage on their own just because it’s a difficult task. No, our love for them wins out, and we do whatever we can to provide all that they need. And we can do the same for the unbelievers we work with, the lost that we play golf with, or the unsaved that are near us each day. Maybe you start praying for them and let them know about it. Perhaps you offer your time in some way. Maybe you just invite them to church. However you might do it, do it soon. Without the Good News, the news is not good.
Charge
As we seek Him today, ask God to enable you to show Jesus to someone who needs Him. Pray for the opportunity, and then seize it when it comes.
