Artificial Intelligence has just broken new ground this past week with the top song on iTunes by Solomon Ray, an AI creation by Christopher Townsend. The AI artist draws over 324,000 monthly listeners.
So being born-again and having the Holy Spirit living within a human heart is no longer necessary to create spiritual music that draws a crowd. Quoting from Townsend’s defense of the imaginary Solomon Ray …
“You cannot tell somebody’s feelings and impact from music, if it’s authentic or fake/fraudulent. Who am I to say what God will or won’t use to get the message His people need to them? I’m just here being an instrument.”
It should also be noted that other AI artists currently hold positions seven and eight on the iTunes Christian chart.
This is just one small example of the increasing power of Artificial Intelligence over and above mankind. Of course some would applaud this as an example of how the Lord uses all things in His service. However, when one considers the sterile nature of AI usurping the creativity of believers in generating “worship” music, we need to reflect on how it undermines the vital connection between a loving God and His children. This represents another small step in the breakdown of that relationship as praise songs from empty vessels fill our Sunday morning “church” services.
