Elections have just wrapped up in Jamaica and Guyana, and as always, the results have left some voters celebrating and others disappointed. It is in times like these that the wisdom of maintaining a healthy detachment from politics becomes clear.
Since our preference is never guaranteed, it’s wise to detach enough to be able to forge ahead without descending into despair, wishing the worst, gloating, or wholly placing our reliance on the party that won. This is especially important for the Christian whose ultimate calling remains unchanged regardless of which political party is in power.

Regardless of who wins, Christians are called to glorify God and reflect Christ in everything. If you’re struggling to do this , rest assured you’re not alone. It’s not uncommon to struggle with pride, fear, worry, vengefulness or doubt in moments like these. Hence why it’s critical to adopt the Biblical postures meant to keep us anchored in our ultimate mission as believers. Here are five of them.
1. Emulate Jesus’ Posture Towards Politics
Jesus lived in a time of intense political tension and social unrest, yet He never lost sight of His true calling. I delved a lot more into this in my pre-election piece, Whose Side Is Jesus On This Election Season in Guyana? | by Life As A Vapour | Sep, 2025 | Medium.
During Jesus’ day, Rome ruled by force, often unjustly, and was infamous for imposing crushing taxes on the people. This environment gave rise to many competing political groups. Still, Jesus never tied Himself to any of these factions. Instead, He chose twelve ordinary men and declared a “manifesto” not of earthly import, but of salvation and reconciliation with God.
This did not mean He was detached from human suffering. Certainly not!
Jesus Himself endured the weight of Roman injustice. He was falsely accused, beaten, and crucified. Yet at no point did He retaliate, conspire against Rome, or pledge loyalty to a political cause to fight them. Instead, He prayed for His persecutors and kept His eyes fixed on the mission entrusted to Him by His Father. Whether your party won or lost, you must do the same!
2. Trust God’s Sovereignty Over Governments
The Bible makes it clear that God’s will is inviolable. Only what He has purposed will come to pass (Daniel 4:35; Psalm 115:3). “He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others” (Daniel 2:21, NIV). He is “sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes” (Daniel 4:17, NIV). This means that governments rule by virtue of God’s will (Romans 13:1). Even when policies seem bad, oppressive, or immoral, we are called to trust that “in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28, NIV). We are also required to submit to authority “not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience” (Romans 13:5, NIV). To resist is to rebel against God Himself (Romans 13:2).
This may be difficult to accept, especially when the ones who lead are not preferred by us. Yet Scripture reassures us that God’s sovereignty is never diminished, and His purposes cannot be thwarted.
3. Trust that You Will Flourish Under Any Government
Throughout the ages, believers have flourished even under antagonistic, repressive, and pagan governments. When we believe that our protection, provision, and sustenance come from God, we can boldly declare with confidence: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31, NIV). “The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” (Psalm 118:6, NIV).
4. Walk in the Spirit, Not the Flesh
Too often, Christians affirm the Word in principle, but when it comes to politics, are tempted to set it aside and operate in the flesh. Emotions and bitter experiences sometimes begin to rule us to the point of exhibiting vile attributes like pride, spite, hatred, bitterness, fear or doubt. This is not the way of Christ.
We are called to walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:25). That means yielding to God’s Word and displaying the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23).
5. Fix Your Hope on Christ Alone
Let us remember that political entities are not the saviors of the world. Humanity’s true problem is sin, and politics is powerless to cure it. I talked a bit more on this in my pre-election piece, Whose Side Is Jesus On This Election Season in Guyana? | by Life As A Vapour | Sep, 2025 | Medium.
We ought never to forget that salvation comes only through Jesus Christ. As such, the believer’s task is clear. We must proclaim Christ, reflect His image, and live in hope as we await His return and the final resolution to all of humanity’s problems.
