Jesus was in conflict with both groups as they had added rules to the commands God called for in the Old Testament. They were the ruling class of the Jews in Israel, basically the center of power, meeting in a council referred to as the Sanhedrin. The primary difference in theology between the two was that the Pharisees acknowledged and the Sadducees rejected a belief in the resurrection of the dead.
