In today’s society, the Bible is often met with skepticism and criticism, particularly from those who argue that it is riddled with inaccuracies and contradictions. A recent comment on my video, “When Did Higher Criticism Begin to Attack the Bible?” stood out to me. The commenter, @flingonber, claimed that defending the Bible’s accuracy is “moot” because, in their view, people who believe in the Bible are “gullible” and “brainwashed.” They also went as far as to say that the Bible is filled with “ridiculously wrong” information, suggesting that no argument could ever convince those who believe in its truth.
This response is not uncommon, but what concerns me most is not the hostility toward the Bible, but the apparent lack of solid evidence supporting such claims. In my response to the commenter, I posed a simple yet critical question: If you truly believe the Bible is filled with “ridiculous” errors, can you provide credible, verifiable evidence for these claims? For too long, modern critics of the Bible have been making sweeping statements about its inaccuracies without offering real proof. On the other hand, we continue to uncover a vast amount of evidence from archaeology, history, and even prophecy that strongly supports the Bible’s accuracy and reliability.
The Absence of Concrete Evidence in Modern Criticism
In many cases, critics of the Bible rely on broad, general statements about its alleged contradictions or factual errors, yet these claims are rarely substantiated by compelling evidence. The argument that the Bible is filled with inaccuracies is often made without careful examination of the evidence that actually exists. Too often, these criticisms come from a place of presupposition rather than objective inquiry. The critic’s position is typically based on a modern worldview, influenced by secularism and materialism, and it assumes that the Bible must conform to contemporary scientific and historical standards. But this is a flawed approach. The Bible was written in ancient times, and to critique it by today’s standards is not only unfair, but also shortsighted.
What concerns me is that, in their rush to dismiss the Bible as irrelevant or erroneous, many critics fail to provide any tangible evidence to back up their claims. Instead, they point to alleged contradictions or discrepancies, many of which are easily explained with further study or a more in-depth understanding of the context. In fact, much of the criticism is rooted in misunderstandings or misinterpretations of the text. This is a fundamental flaw of modern thinking — making claims based on emotional reactions or personal biases, rather than on concrete, verifiable evidence.
The Call for Solid Evidence
When people dismiss the Bible as “ridiculously wrong,” it’s not enough to simply make a statement and move on. If you believe the Bible is inaccurate, it’s crucial to provide evidence that substantiates that belief. So far, however, many critics of the Bible fail to do this. They rarely back up their arguments with meaningful, verifiable proof. Instead, they rely on vague generalizations or cherry-picked examples that are either misinterpreted or easily refuted. This lack of intellectual rigor is troubling.
If modern thinkers are so sure that the Bible is filled with errors, why don’t they provide evidence for these claims? Rather than dismissing the Bible as “myth” or “fiction,” why don’t critics take the time to examine it thoroughly and engage with the growing body of evidence that continues to support its accuracy? Instead of making broad accusations, I would encourage these critics to present specific examples and engage in open, thoughtful dialogue. So far, the vast majority of accusations against the Bible are nothing more than unsubstantiated opinions.
The Evidence That Supports the Bible
While critics often point to supposed contradictions, the Bible has been consistently affirmed by archaeology, history, and prophecy. In fact, it is the critics who have failed to provide solid evidence for their claims, while a wealth of evidence continues to mount in favor of the Bible’s historical and factual accuracy.
1. The Discovery of Ancient Cities
In the past, skeptics frequently questioned the existence of cities like Jericho and Nineveh, which are mentioned in the Bible. They argued that these cities were fictional, a product of myth and legend. Yet, in recent decades, archaeology has proven these critics wrong. Excavations in Jericho uncovered the remains of a city that fits the Biblical description of its destruction. Archaeologists found evidence of a collapsed wall that matches the account in Joshua 6. Likewise, the discovery of Nineveh’s ruins in modern-day Iraq confirmed its existence as an ancient city. These findings do not merely support the Bible’s historical claims — they validate the entire narrative.
2. King David’s Inscription
For years, critics doubted the existence of King David, claiming there was no direct evidence for his reign. But in 1993, a remarkable discovery was made in Tel Dan, Israel — a stone inscription that mentions the “House of David.” This inscription serves as concrete evidence that King David was a real historical figure, affirming what the Bible has stated all along.
3. Fulfilled Prophecies
The Bible is also remarkable for its detailed prophecies, many of which have been fulfilled in ways that are both precise and astonishing. A prime example is the prophecy of the destruction of the city of Tyre, as recorded in Ezekiel 26. Ezekiel predicted that the city would be besieged, its mainland would be destroyed, and its ruins would be spread out into the sea. This prophecy was fulfilled by historical events, including the siege by Nebuchadnezzar and the later destruction of Tyre by Alexander the Great. The fulfillment of this prophecy further reinforces the Bible’s credibility.
4. The Dead Sea Scrolls
Perhaps one of the most significant modern discoveries in terms of Biblical accuracy is the finding of the Dead Sea Scrolls in the 20th century. These scrolls contain portions of nearly every book of the Old Testament and date back to the second century BC. The Dead Sea Scrolls provide compelling evidence that the Biblical texts we have today are remarkably close to the ancient manuscripts. They show that the Bible has been accurately preserved through the centuries, further bolstering its reliability.
The Consequence of Lack of Evidence
As we look at the growing body of evidence that supports the Bible’s accuracy, it’s clear that modern critics have little to stand on. They may make sweeping statements about the Bible’s errors, but without presenting substantial evidence to support their claims, their position becomes increasingly untenable. When confronted with a wealth of archaeological and historical data that validates the Bible, the modern critic’s position begins to look less like an informed stance, and more like an unsupported opinion.
Ultimately, it is crucial for anyone — whether believer or skeptic — to approach the Bible with intellectual honesty. While the Bible may not conform to every modern expectation, it has shown itself to be an incredibly reliable source of historical, prophetic, and spiritual truth. To dismiss it without real evidence or study is a disservice to truth, reason, and the pursuit of knowledge.
The lack of solid evidence supporting modern criticisms of the Bible should be a cause for concern. As we continue to uncover historical, archaeological, and prophetic evidence that confirms the Bible’s accuracy, those who claim the Bible is “ridiculously wrong” need to provide proof if they wish to be taken seriously. Until then, the Bible’s credibility remains strong — backed by centuries of research and a growing body of evidence.
