With a Subtitle: Sin hides within and behind the powerful.
A brief Excerpt: Epstein files expose elite sexual exploitation and other sins. The author argues the Bible offers a better explanation for this evil.
The Epstein files are repellent.
We see systematic and disturbing sexual exploitation
Internal documents, captions, and testimonies in the 3 million files include detailed descriptions of sexual abuse and trafficking of young women and girls.
One of the victims is a 9 year old girl.¹
There is even an account of a forced pregnancy where a teenage victim was treated as a “human incubator” seemingly as part of his efforts to create a “superior gene pool.²
The baby was taken from her mother within minutes of being born. The “Nazi”-like effort seems like it could be tied to Epstein’s broader fascination with eugenics research and transhumanism.⁴
We see a network of elite associates and enablers
A wide group of business leaders, politicians, royals, famous scientists, and celebrities chose to associate with Epstein.⁵
Some continued to be with him in spite of his behavior. Some because of it. Few expressed concern about the horrific crimes.
One example: JP Morgan continued to ignore internal warnings about suspicious Epstein activity because key executives wanted to keep him as a client.⁶
We see overwhelming injustice and widespread inaction
Included in the files is evidence of an indictment from the early 2000s that would have charged Epstein and other conspirators with “enticing individuals who had not attained the age of 18 years to engage in prostitution.”
Epstein later agreed to a plea deal in 2008 that somehow avoided federal sex crimes with minors and secured non-prosecution agreements for his co-conspirators.
Even after the plea deal, the US Virgin Islands continued accepting donations from Epstein and ignored the frequent arrival and departure of young women to and from his island.⁷
Seeing Reality
It’s horrific and offensive.
And that’s why, if we open our eyes to reality, it is hopeful.
Because when the illusion of innate human goodness is stripped away, we see the utter necessity of divine redemption from a God who will restore justice and wipe away every tear in the end.
If only we would acknowledge that we are not ok on our own and need a salvation from outside ourselves.
Many non-Christians find the idea that there is something fundamentally wrong with humanity to be offensive.
A secular humanist might describe it as an antiquated idea that creates unnecessary guilt when what we really need is to work on self-acceptance and to be responsible to others.
In other words, there is a systemic problem that needs to addressed.
There are possible explanations to offer when crimes are committed:
- Such an explanation might include an admission that human institutions have failed but would pivot to a future change stemming from improved oversight to ensure that no one is above the law.
- It could involve an argument that the revulsion we feel is actually a sign of moral progress. Evidence that our collective standards for morality are rising so we can better hold people accountable in the future.
- There might be a claim that lack of education and environment are to blame for the crimes and callous attitudes of the perpetrators.
In short, with better oversight, more education, and continued faith in our moral improvement, we can move forward and continue to advance humanity. There is still hope ahead.
The problem is that we know these explanations are inadequate.
Not just because of the scale of the abuse, but because the perpetrators are already the most educated, successful, and “advanced” people in society.
Is there any way to maintain a realistic hope with this kind of worldview? I couldn’t think of any.
Apparently, neither could Gemini.

Secular morality fails to address such callous capacity for evil.
A Better Answer
The follower of Jesus knows that the reality of Epstein and others named in those files opens our eyes to the reality of our condition.
It’s far beyond systemic. It’s a supernatural problem.
It’s sin.
What the Bible calls humans missing the mark established by a holy and righteous God.
And missing the mark is what humans will do when left to our own devices. We elevate ourselves at the expense of others. We leverage our resources and power for our own benefit and use others instead of serving them.
The drive towards selfishness is part of our human hearts. But sin is more than personal wrongdoing.
Sin is a cosmic evil.
It’s a destructive and pervasive force that rebels against God’s authority, corrupts creation, and alienates humans from God and each other.
The Origin of Sin
Our world was made good. Yet it is a fallen world and all of us who live here are subject to its fallen state.
How did it fall?
One of God’s highest angelic creatures committed cosmic treason, rebelling against God’s good plans.
This angelic creature sought to elevate himself at the expense of all others. And when his rebellion in Heaven failed, he was banished to earth to live out his hatred of God.
It’s this serpent who first worked to deceive humanity and cause a rift between Man and God.
And ever since our ancestors first listened to his whispers, that adversary has continued to work against humanity. To either keep us in denial about the true nature of our condition or bound up in shame and self-loathing.
It’s this same deceiving serpent who supports a worldview where might makes right.
Where influence and bureaucratic institutions can be weaponized to shield corrupt people and institutions, just like we see in the Epstein files.
Where the wealthy and powerful can create systems to commodify and abuse the vulnerable for personal pleasure.
The good news is that there’s another way.
Fixing the Human Heart
The Bible tells us that humans find ourselves in a paradoxical position.
We are absolutely loved by God. More than we could ever imagine. And yet we are separated from Him. Because we don’t believe this love is truly real and for us.
So instead, we distrust and hide from God, just like our ancestors did when they were deceived by the original rebel.
We think God wants to keep us from what we really need to be happy. Or that He just wants to see us make a mistake so He can punish us.
It’s so natural to still believe the lie.
But God did something to show how blatant that lie has always been.
God came to earth Himself.
And God took on flesh as a human being in the person of Jesus Christ. He was the opposite of the cosmic rebel in every way. He obeyed instead of rebelling. He spoke truth instead of deception. He came to serve instead of to be served.
In doing so, He defeated the cosmic power of Satan, sin, and death when He died on the Cross and rose again three days later.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord [Romans 6:23]
When we come to see what He did for us, we see the depth of love that God has always had for humanity.
We deal with our sin problem not by reforming our own behavior or fixing our hearts. Instead, Jesus gives us new hearts when we accept what He did.
We simply give Him our desire to turn from our own sin and offer our trust and obedience in leading a new life.
24 “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” 25 For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. [1 Peter 2: 24–25]
Ending with Hope
Epstein shows us what happens when selfish human drives (sin) are unchecked by conscience, social restraint, or moral law.
There is no clean way to label the perpetrators and identify a systemic problem. There are Republicans and Democrats. There are royals and non-royals. Scientists and business executives. Artists and actors. All are educated. Successful. Advanced.
The people who should have been the smartest among us are the perpetrators. Accountability systems ultimately failed. There is no systemic fix.
Our problem as humans is not a lack of knowledge like a secular humanist (or a Gnostic) might say. Our problem is sin.
Far from being pessimistic, the idea of sin is utterly realistic.
Acknowledging the Christian view seems hard and destructive. And it is destructive to the ego. But it’s ultimately hopeful.
Unlike the secular view, which seems hopeful to the ego but is ultimately hopeless.
When we see that we can never save ourselves from the corruption that plagues us, sin shows us our need for an external moral redemption.
And through Jesus, we can face the darkness inside of humanity. And we’ll find we’re not overwhelmed by despair, but full of hope and love for others in Christ.
