Stay close to Jesus

Seek out what He has planned for you today. Don't try to squeeze Him into your agenda, but give Him your daily planner, and allow Him to mark out your day. They have the faith to do what He will enable you to do for Him.

Scripture

Our focus verse for today comes from Luke 9:57, ” As they were going along the road, someone said to Him, ‘I will follow You wherever You go.’ “

Background

” Lord, what would You have me do today? ” That’s a scary question to some of us, isn’t it? Asking a question like that just might get you an answer. And then what would you do? What would be your next step after God laid something particular on your heart that you ought to do? You’d have to make a decision, wouldn’t you? You’d have to decide whether you were going to follow through and be obedient, or ignore the promptings of God for another day. I wonder if that’s why so many of us have the radio playing while we drive in to work, or turn the television on as we begin our day around the house. With the noise and distraction of someone else talking or singing, we don’t have to let our minds concentrate on listening to God speak directly to us. We can come to Him when we are ready or when we need something and just give Him that little section of our lives. That seems to be the case in these final verses of Luke chapter 9. We are given a few examples of people who seem to want to follow Jesus, but they’ve come to Him with one ear while the other is still listening to the radio. They’ve got an idea of what it might mean to follow Him, but it’s jumbled up by the news of the day and the forecast for next week and the plans for next month. Following Him certainly seems like the right thing to do, but settling on a schedule that works for everyone proves to be a little tough. And how many of us know what that feels like? We work well with the big picture of giving our lives to Jesus as our Savior, but turning each minute over to Him as Lord ends up being a struggle. But why would He not have a plan for you for this next hour? How would He have the very hairs on your head counted, and then not care how you spent the precious few minutes He gave you each day? Ask Him what He wants you to do today. Open you mind, and your schedule, to the directing of the Holy Spirit, the Lord of your life.
