Scripture
Our verse for today comes from Genesis 43:7, “But they said, ‘The man asked us pointedly about ourselves and our family, saying, “Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?” And we told him according to his words. Could we possibly have known that he would say, “Bring your brother down?” ‘ ”
Background
If you enjoy action movies, then you have probably seen one that involves a hostage of some kind. And if so, then you are familiar with the anxiety, tension, and tactics common to such a situation. Each side is intent on gaining what they want, and to accomplish it, they go through painstaking measures to try and secure their target. For both sides, knowing as much as you can about the other equips them to maneuver as effectively as possible. And if either side, captors or negotiators, knows more about their opponent than the other realizes, that information may be the difference between success and failure. Plots often turn at the moment when a detail is discovered, hidden from the antagonist up to that point, that reveals a point of vulnerability. Just such a turn occurred when Joseph realized the opportunity he had to get his brothers to bring his beloved Benjamin to him. Holding Simeon as hostage, the others were charged to return to Canaan and not come back again unless Benjamin was with them. And when these orders were explained to their father Jacob, he grieved over the thought of losing his youngest because of the loose tongues of his sons. But they had simply answered Joseph’s questions. What could it matter that they had another brother back at home? How could that factor in? But Joseph had gained his trump card. And he would play it to complete his master plan.
Application
God has a master plan. And He requires the turning over of our hidden treasures back in Canaan. You may not think they would matter one way or another, but God knows your vulnerabilities better than you do. You betray yourself even as you go about your day. Eleven twelfths is a lot, but it’s not the whole. That last piece may be small, but it’s not insignificant. Simeon was released when Benjamin was presented. Total surrender brought complete restoration. Joseph showed it to his brothers, and Jesus proved it on the cross. It’s the only tactic that can deliver complete freedom.
Charge
As we seek Him today, bring to God what you have been keeping out of His sight. Let nothing keep you a hostage any longer.
