Pray for the Fearful

Pray for those who have had their faith shaken by the evil of this world. Trust in Him even more as you rely on His faithfulness.

Scripture

Our verse for today comes from 1 Corinthians 15:55, ” O Death, where is your sting? O Death, where is your victory? “

Background

At least three people were killed and over 140 were injured when two separate blasts occurred at the Boston Marathon some time ago. Exploding just seconds apart and within yards of the finish line, the two bombs tore off limbs and mangled bodies, creating a chaotic scene of flight and rescue that brought back memories of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The marathon had been under way for several hours, and many of the runners had completed the 26.2 mile course. The moment of the explosion, though, coincided with a point in the race when scores of runners and groves of people would be at or near the finish line. That window of time is not as brief as it might be for other smaller, less famous races though, as the marathon hosts some 27,000 runners and as many as half a million spectators. And so, at just the desired time, two bombs went off in accordance with the evil designs of some unknown party. Lives were lost, limbs were destroyed, and fear was spread throughout a community and a nation. And to what end? What could possibly be accomplished by killing spectators and runners while they participated in a celebration of the beginning of America’s freedom, even if they had no clue what Patriots’ Day was? What cause was furthered by killing .000006 of the people at that race?

Application

The battles of Lexington and Concord, the first engagements of the Revolutionary War, resulted in 49 American deaths at the hands of the British. Their lives were given in sacrifice for their country, surrendered at the hands of a foe they fought to overcome. Theirs had purpose and honor, and the enemy was known and visible. The attacks at the Boston Marathon were sneaky and senseless. The fatalities and injuries unwarranted. It’s a different world today than it was in 1775. But sin is still prevalent, and death still seeks us all. But the victory is still ours. Faith in Christ doesn’t bow to hidden bombs, armed soldiers, or invasive cancers. So it most definitely can bolster you today, whatever may come your way.

Charge

As we seek Him today, pray for those who have had their faith shaken by the evil of this world. Trust in Him even more as you rely on His faithfulness.
