Scripture
Our verse for today comes from 2 Samuel 23:5, ” Although my house is not so with God, yet He has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and secure. For this is all my salvation and all my desire; will He not make it increase? ”
Background
My goal for this past Saturday was to get my garden tilled. All week long I planned on rising up that morning to get it done before the remainder of a very full weekend ran its course. But I also feared that as Saturday drew near, something else would come up and I would be denied my goal. The place where we rent the tiller did not allow for the reserving of equipment, so I thought a lack of availability might be my downfall. The store is thirty minutes from our house, so I wondered if inconvenience might stand in the way. Much else needed to be done even before we hosted some friends for dinner around 5pm that night, so I anticipated a shifting of priorities would likely delay my garden another week. But none of these conflicts occurred. Even though we arrived to rent the tiller late Friday night, there was still one available. The cooking required for the meal was lightened by the menu choices and the contributions of those joining us. And much of the cleaning and such that was necessary to allow guests into our home was completed without issue or delay, albeit with nary a moment to spare. Now, that was how twenty-four hours played out for one person on one particular weekend. They don’t always come together so neatly. Your days or nights may have had a slightly different telling. The beginning, ending, or everywhere in between may have felt like a bad dream come true. It’s safe to say that not everyone’s weekend was splendid, and some are still struggling as we enter the work week.
Application
So let me remind you that God is a God for homes unsettled. He sat at dinner tables where the tension was as thick as lamb’s wool. He came late when a dying friend needed His healing touch. He chose a bloodline whose greatest king was an adulterer and murderer. He forgave prostitutes and touched lepers. It’s certain He knows shame and despair. If your house is not as you’d like it to be, let God be your hope and desire. Bring Him back to the center of your dwelling.
Charge
As we seek Him today, ask God to make His peace to rule in your heart. Let Him restore order where there has been unrest and upheaval.
