Scripture

Our verse for today comes from Psalm 61:5, “For you have heard my vows, O God; you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.”

Background

I have been blessed with a godly heritage. Even though my grandparents passed away when I was young (I never even met my maternal grandfather), I did have the privilege of spending time with my paternal grandparents, who were alive for the greater part of my childhood and into my teenage years. When one is young, though, the blessings of any heritage, let alone a godly one, are pretty far from top of the list of blessings one considers around the Thanksgiving table. What I do have are stories—bits and pieces, smatterings of conversations kids with wide-open ears gather and file away in the recesses of the brain. Reminiscing about aunts and uncles at family gatherings, looking at the barren fields that once held strawberries, laughing about how Mama would make them recite Bible verses and parts of the Catechism as they picked berries—as if having to crouch over in the hot sun wasn’t bad enough! Arthritic fingers pressing play on an old cassette deck, the sounds of the King James Bible filling the sitting room, the “thee’s” and “thou’s” drifting through open windows and across the yard where I played. Family traditions of reading the entire story of Jesus’ birth and boyhood every Christmas Eve, even once when we discovered a dead fish in the aquarium, Dad could not be dissuaded from continuing. The fish was dead; it would wait. Jesus’ birth was more important. These were not big things—this was God in everyday life. And without knowing it, my grandparents and parents passed down godliness. I have a heritage that is a blessing. And as a parent, I have made my vows over my children—that I will raise them to know Jesus the Lord and King. So maybe one day, my grandchildren will recall stories of when Grandma would blast Rich Mullins’ music throughout the house and sing every word in a loud, off-key voice as she peeled apples for applesauce, and how Mom would dance and sing along, not knowing she was also being brought up to fulfill a vow so they could enjoy a heritage of God.

Application

How do you incorporate God into your daily life? Are the small moments pointing others to Him? While not all of us have a strong Christian upbringing, we have all been touched by someone who helped lead us to where we are today. And more importantly, we have the duty and pleasure of magnifying God in all we say and do, no matter what our circumstance or audience.

Charge

As we seek Him today, may we glorify God in all our words and deeds.
