Man and Woman—Interchangeable or Complementary?

Theology on the Lighter Side – Eve came from the rib of Adam

At Sunday School they were teaching how God created everything, including human beings. Little Johnny seemed especially intent when they told him how Eve was created out of one of Adam’s ribs.

Later in the week, his mother noticed him lying down as though he were ill, and she said, ‘Johnny, what is the matter, young boy?’

Little Johnny responded, “I have pain in my side. I think I’m going to have a wife.”

The Deeper Point …

Adam and Eve were unique in how God created them. Adam was the firstborn of God’s creation of mankind. Eve was to be man’s helper, yet such an intimate and interrelated and balanced relationship existed that God took a rib from Adam as part of Eve’s creation.

So many today see man and woman as interchangeable. Though we are equal in the sight of the Lord, we complement each other, each providing strengths that create a unity when coming together in marriage. Of course every human trait can be seen on a bell curve. There are women stronger than some men. There are men more intuitive than some women. But God intentionally called those of us who desire a mate to seek out that balance based on where we all fit on the bell curve of personalities.

To pit biological men against biological women in competitive sports suggests that women on the extreme end of the physical spectrum (say swimmers) are against men who are also on the extreme end of the physical spectrum. The evidence is clear that this is unfair, and, sadly, it has taken decades for many to accept this reality. What continues to prevail in our culture is this same view of the interchangeability of men and women in same-sex marriages and locker rooms.

America is in a transition back to common sense, promoting the value of men and women being complementary to each other rather than interchangeable or adversarial toward the beauty of our biological uniqueness, which goes all the way back to Adam and Eve.
