Scripture
Our verse for today comes from Matthew 27:49, ” The rest said, ‘Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.’ ”
Background
What will save you today? If you spend any time talking to a NASCAR fan, eventually they will say something about a driver’s luck. Some drivers seem to be suffering through a stretch of bad luck, while others have avoided those same pitfalls and are enjoying a run of good luck. A driver can be on his way to a dominating win, and the bad luck of a broken engine part or flat tire can cost him the race. Outside of NASCAR, we put our hopes in people, places and things all throughout the day, many times without even realizing it. We may depend on a particular habit or routine to make things go our way, or trust that someone is going to look out for us when things get rough. As followers of Jesus, our ultimate hope is in His redeeming work on the cross. We are confident that at our life’s end, His grace will carry us on into His eternal presence. But in the nuts and bolts of the day, what do those around you see you trusting in? Where do they see you putting your attention, focus and priority? When a situation arises, how do they see you handle it? Do they hear you call out to some kind of Elijah rather than boldly leaning on the power of Christ? If there is that room for them to misinterpret, then perhaps your faith is not as firmly planted where you think it is.
Application
Whenever you have a cross to bear, you will have to trust in something. You won’t be able to bear it on your own. You were not made to. But to whom will you turn? Where does your heart look for strength and comfort when you’ve come to the end of your rope? How about when the rope is just beginning to slip away? The good news is that the rope is not the issue. It’s just the means to get you to realize your need. Trusting in your own moxy can only take you so far. Relying on clever methods has a limited shelf life. And if it’s not obvious to many that Christ is your stronghold, then perhaps you lean on these ways more than you realize. If so, you can do something about that. Put all your trust in Jesus and clearly call out to Him, knowing with confidence that He will save you when luck cannot.
Charge
As we seek Him today, ask God to purify your heart so that your only trust is in the One who is trustworthy. Boldly call on Him, and see how He comes to save you.
