Theology on the Lighter Side –
It was Christmas, and the judge was in a merry mood as he asked the prisoner, “What are you charged with?” “Doing my Christmas shopping early,” replied the defendant. “That’s no offense,” said the judge. “How early were you doing this shopping?” “Before the store opened,” was the response.
The Bible presents a strong case for mankind to obey the laws put in place by our elected leaders. Romans 13:1-7 begins with, “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities,” because they have been put in place by God. In Romans 3:31 we are told to “uphold the law.”
Of course, there can always be a challenge when our elected leaders are not following God’s commands. In Acts 5, Peter and the apostles found that line being crossed …
But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men." - Acts 5:29
However, it is important to note the context of any set of verses. In the case of Acts 5, the disciples were being told they should “never again teach in this man’s [Jesus’] name.” That was a point at which Peter and the others had to decide who to follow, God or man.
There will be times in each of our lives when we are faced with the same question of whom to follow. The answer should come from a submissive study of God’s Word, good Christian counsel, and prayer.
