Words of Wisdom from the Babylon Bee – Should we support a secular Israel or has God turned away from His original chosen race.
Genesis 12:1-3 Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Deuteronomy 14:2 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God, and the LORD has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.
Consider David’s decision regarding his opportunity to kill King Saul as an illustration of our responsibility to a secular Israel …
1 Samuel 26:8-9 Then Abishai said to David, “God has given your enemy into your hand this day. Now please let me pin him to the earth with one stroke of the spear, and I will not strike him twice.” But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him, for who can put out his hand against the LORD'S anointed and be guiltless?”
Even though Saul and his army was roaming the countryside looking to kill David, God’s chosen King, David refused to take the opportunity (for the second time) to take action against Saul when given the opportunity. God was protecting Saul even though he had been condemned to be ultimately deposed by David.
Application for Today
America can choose not to defend the largely secular state of Israel. They have lost their way, refusing to see Jesus as the Messiah. Perhaps many would argue that America is not David in this illustration. However, we are one of the very few countries willing to see Israel (and the Jews in general) as a race to be actively supported and protected rather than allow their neighbors to destroy them. As with Saul, God has not released the Gentiles from a responsibility to support the Jews.
As Biblical Christians we need to be unwilling to reject the Jews of today, regardless of whether or not they are blind to who Jesus truly is. The state of Israel is no more unworthy of being spared annihilation than David viewed Saul, who was immersed in sin, trying repeatedly to kill him.
With the coming of the man, Jesus, to earth, God may have demonstrated a broadening of His blessings to the Gentiles, but there is no indication that the Lord has rejected His people, the Jews (Romans 11:1-36).
The “land” from Genesis 12:1, quoted above, is the state of Israel which was returned to the Jews in 1948, based on prophesy (Isaiah 11:11). To be involved in God’s work is to be part of supporting His pledge to the Jews. Are they perfect? No. Are they always moral in their actions and intentions? No. However, let those who are without sin cast the first stone (John 8:7).
