Excerpt: Sins are compared to credit card debt, with the full payment due in eternity. Repentance and accepting Jesus Christ as Savior are the only ways to pay off this debt and secure a place in Heaven.
Theology on the Lighter Side – Sadly, every one of us is a sinner before the Lord, from Adam’s first sin of eating the forbidden fruit (Genesis 3:6) to the bad thoughts or behaviors we had this morning.
None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one. - Romans 3:10-12
There certainly are times when both believers and non-believers in Jesus Christ are called on to pay for bad behavior while on earth. It is why prisons exist, for example. However, our time in this life is so temporary compared to eternity.
You do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. - James 4:14
And, like using a credit card, it is in eternity when the full weight of the bill for our sins comes due. The only two choices are Heaven if we have been forgiven for our sins, or Hell if we have to pay for our sins.
And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life. - Matthew 25:46
Each of us can wipe away all our sin-based credit card debt by asking the Lord into our hearts. However, we must make that decision before transitioning from this life to the next.
And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment. - Hebrews 9:27
God’s grace in providing His Son as a sacrifice for all our sins is the answer to paying off our debt. No sins are too great for the love and forgiveness of our Lord.
As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. - Psalm 103:12
There is nothing we can do to save ourselves by seeming to be a decent person in comparison to others.
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. - Ephesians 2:8-9
The answer to God’s forgiveness and eternity in Heaven is to repent of our sins and ask Jesus Christ to be our Savior and Lord.
