Scripture
Our verse for today comes from Psalm 8:3-4, ” When I consider Your heavens, the works of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him? “
Background
My second son is a builder. He’s only fourteen years old, so he’s not quite (yet) able to build a house or do an addition or renovation. But he has constructed a few tree forts, made numerous zip lines, designed and installed floor-to-ceiling and suspended garage shelving, built an extra-large animal cage, and helped out on several large jobs like installing new flooring. His latest project is building a rock climbing wall. He and a couple of his siblings have gotten very active in climbing, and so my son decided that they needed their own wall to climb. He’s toyed with the idea before, and even bought some of the supplies. But this time he’s going all out. This weekend he completed a large section of the wall frame that reaches about twelve or fourteen feet in the air, and he was faced with the task of raising it up into place. I was not around to offer what little help I could, and so he went ahead and commissioned five or six guys to help him get it in place. With ropes and ladders and wood supports, they eventually got the structure pretty close to where he wanted it. And well after sundown he finally finished digging the holes for the cement supports. It’s a significant undertaking for one young person, and it will be impressive once it’s completed later this week.
Application
But when it comes to grand creations, nothing compares to God’s handiwork in the universe around us. As my son and a dozen other hands struggled mightily to move their wall into place, our Creator was looking out over all that He made out of nothing. David’s imagery in this Psalm powerfully relates the greatness of God when compared to what He can create with the mere wave of His fingers. And amidst this greatness, this power and awesomeness, His goodness shows forth in His love for us. We are on His mind, and He is still visiting with us. And for ones as insignificant as we are, I wonder if we are as mindful of Him as we should be?
Charge
As we seek Him today, take your mind to places it might not have been in a while. Visit with God, and let Him work on His creation.
