Scripture
Our verse for today comes from Jeremiah 6:14, “They have also healed the hurt of My people slightly, saying, ‘Peace, peace!’ when there is no peace.”
Background
On ballots across the country there have been constitutional amendments to define marriage as the legal union between one man and one woman. You have undoubtedly seen and heard much about these amendments, and the intensity continues to increase as both sides attempt to get their message out before critical votes are cast. I say critical, because I believe it is always a good thing when each of us, and society in general, recognizes and agrees with God’s design. Regardless of the scope or magnitude of the issue, what is always good for a person or a people is what aligns with God’s purpose and will. But even though this is important, perhaps even a seminal moment in our history, I do not want us as God’s children to be saying, “Peace, peace!” when there is no peace. Certainly amending our laws to more closely reflect God’s intentions will bring some honor to Him. Most of us will vote that way because we believe what the Bible says about God’s creation of man and woman. But then what? After an amendment passes, if it does, what does that do to you and me? What if a homosexual is elected as governor or president in four years? Where is the peace of the amendment then? And what if your state chooses to vote against the amendment? Are our cries of “Peace, peace!” silenced? Is God’s plan undone and the unrighteous proved victorious?
Application
I want us to honor our Lord with our conscience. But once the ballot is cast, our society will not be saved. Peace will not reign. We must not hope for deliverance to come from that which cannot deliver. Our hope is in the Lord. Only His sovereign will and power can save a society, and a soul. We must honor Him at every turn, yes, but regardless of how or if we honor Him, only He can bring peace. In a country, in a society, in a marriage. That must be our hope and our prayer. So when you vote, vote as God intended, but don’t settle for slight healing. Pray that our big God has only begun to move as only He can.
Charge
As we seek Him today, pray that God’s intentions will move through the hearts of His people. Pray that you will be one of those who makes a difference for His Name’s sake.
