Our verse for today comes from Genesis 11:7, “Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”

Background

“I don’t know you, but I know you.” Perhaps you’ve heard that line before. Perhaps you’ve used it. I’ve heard it said in movies, usually by a guy when he meets a girl for the first time. As he tries to woo her, he attempts to describe her personality, her likes and dislikes, all based on what he thinks he can read of her from the few minutes he has spent observing or talking with her. Now I don’t know each of you who might read this piece. But I do know you in that I know you have overcome some kind of obstacle. You cannot have made it out of grade school, much less gone through adolescence, entered adulthood, ventured out on your own, or gotten married and raised a family, without having an obstacle or two dozen stare you down. So I do know you enough to say with confidence that you know what it’s like to struggle and prevail. There’s also a high probability that you are right now, at this very stage in your life, dealing with an obstacle of some magnitude. That, along with our heartbeat, seems to be the surest sign that we’re alive. And those challenges come from any and every direction, don’t they? Nothing is sacred or off limits. And if that’s the case, how would you feel to consider that those obstacles actually could be coming from God Himself? What is your response to God after you’ve expressed your struggle or frustration, and He says He knows all about it because He’s the One who put it there?

Application

The circumference of Earth at the equator is 24,901 miles. So half way around the world is a long way, over 12,000 miles. And most places “over there” do almost everything differently than we do it over here. Especially the language. Planes can get us there, and we can observe and follow customs pretty quickly. Overcoming language barriers, now that’s a lot tougher. But God created the languages. It’s His obstacle. Just like what might seem overwhelming in your life right now. But He is able. He can do and see you through. I know that about you.

Charge

As we seek Him today, ask God to be the bridge to overcome your obstacle. Go to Him to solve what came from Him.
