From Being Oppressed to Being a Threat to the Kingdom of Darkness

How Knowing Who I Am in Christ Changed Everything for Me

Have you ever felt oppressed, even as a believer? I know I have. Despite being a tongue-speaking, Bible-believing Christian, I found myself under the heavy yoke of oppression, affliction, and fear. I prayed fervently, hoping God would intervene. Though He sent His Word to strengthen me, I often let the enemy shake my faith, preventing that Word from bearing fruit in my life.

I pray that God grants you the grace of patience to read this to the end, as it has the power to transform you greatly.

My Struggle with Oppression

For months, even years, I battled this inner turmoil. I lived in fear, allowing doubts to cloud my mind. I started to see myself as a perpetual prey to the devil. My joy and peace were significantly affected, and the more I fought, the more exhausted I became.

I remember a moment when I was at my breaking point. I cried out to God, asking Him to send someone my way so I could pour out my heart. In His mercy, He answered my prayer.

The Turning Point

A friend reached out shortly after my plea. After listening to my worries and fears, he said something that changed everything for me: “The problem you have is not the enemy; it’s ignorance. You don’t know who you are in Christ.”

That statement struck me deeply. I realized I was suffering from a spiritual deficiency that the enemy was exploiting. I had been glorifying Satan more than God, failing to understand the immense authority God had bestowed upon me over every darkness, including the works of Satan.

Understanding My Authority in Christ

With the Holy Spirit’s help, my understanding expanded. I discovered that through Adam’s fall, mankind was handed over to sin and the darkness of this world. But God, in His mercy, sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to die for us, liberating us from sin and every form of darkness.

As 2 Corinthians 5:17 states,

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

We died with Christ and were resurrected with Him. The life we now live is not our own.

These words may sound cliché, but they are living truths. I am no longer a slave to sin or fear. God has stripped the enemy of his power over me, keeping me at His right hand, far above all principalities, powers, and rulers of darkness (Ephesians 1:21).

Living in Victory

The issue is not whether bad times will come or if the kingdom of darkness will strike; the Bible warns us that “the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). However, we must remember that Christ has given us His name and authority.

Philippians 2:9–10 reminds us,

“Therefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow.”

We can ask anything in His name and will receive it by faith (John 14:13).

So, friends, the name of Jesus is our strong tower. Rebuke, in the name of Jesus anything that doesn’t seem right in your life, and watch how it normalizes. You have absolutely nothing to fear.

No matter how the enemy tries to hurt you or fashion weapons against you, remind him that you are in charge. You were lost to him the moment Jesus died for you and when you accepted Him as your Lord and Savior.

As Romans 8:31 states,

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”

Christ in you is greater than anything you face. He has given you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; nothing shall hurt you (Luke 10:19).

Embrace Your Identity in Christ

The moment you shift your mindset from being a victim to embracing your identity as a victor, everything begins to fall into place. You are more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37). There is no battle or challenge that God hasn’t equipped you to conquer and overcome. Always remember that victory belongs to God, who lives in us and grants us daily triumphs.

Exercise the authority He has given you, friends! The moment you give your life to Jesus, the old things have passed away; you are now a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). Whatever addiction or stronghold the enemy once had over you is destroyed and broken.

John 8:36 assures us,

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

And regardless of the enemy’s contrary voices, the Word of God reassures us that no one speaks unless authorized by God.

Psalm 2:4 declares,

“He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision.”

You have nothing to fear. What you are afraid of is, in fact, afraid of you.

So relax, be of good cheer, and exercise your authority in Christ. You are equipped for victory!
