Our verse for today comes from Luke 2:15, ” So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.’ “

Background

In the movie, A Few Good Men , two marines are on trial for the murder of a fellow marine on the base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The marines were charged with stuffing a rag soaked in poison down the victim’s throat which caused him to die. The defendants claimed that they were performing a ” code red, ” which is an intra-unit form of discipline intended to address the poor performance of a fellow marine and motivate him to improve, when the victim, Pvt. Santiago, suddenly started bleeding and eventually died. They insisted that they had been ordered to perform the code red, even though code reds had been officially denounced in a memo from Washington. As the trial progressed, the defense became convinced that the commander of the base, Col. Jessup, had ordered the code red, intent on preserving the image of his camp and the unquestioned authority of his command. But it is that confidence in his authority that undoes him. For he claims that he was about to transfer Santiago off the base the very next day for his own safety, even though he had supposedly ordered that Santiago was not to be harmed in any way. Thus the defense saw through the web of lies, as it had already been established that whatever Jessup ordered was always carried out. Therefore, how could Santiago be in danger from the other marines and need a transfer if Jessup had ordered him left alone?

Application

The colonel’s authority, abused and consumed by pride, led others to actions that cost a private’s life and a colonel’s career. What a difference that is to the blessed authority the angels brought with them as they heralded the arrival of King Jesus. They announced His birth and told the shepherds to go see Him, and off they went. Sincere truth about God’s Son led them to go and worship and proclaim to others what they had seen and heard. God’s words of authority are before us every day. The only tragedy they bring is when we choose not to follow them. How will your defense look when the time comes?
