Words of Wisdom from the Babylon Bee – This is a famous sermon written and preached by Jonathan Edwards in 1741. It is a classic example of God’s wrath toward the lost, who must pay the ultimate price for a lifetime of rejecting His plan of salvation and remission of sins. Many see a vengeful God as representative of Christianity, whereas others reject this view outright by, instead, focusing on Jesus exclusively through the lens of infinite love for mankind. Neither perspective is theologically complete, based on Scripture.
Over 280 years after Edwards delivered that Hell-fire speech, sermons that press on fear as the basis for evangelism have long since been reduced to primarily legalistic churches intent on intimidation of their congregants. Most Biblical Christian teachings today emphasize God’s desire that all can be saved through acceptance of His Son as Lord and Savior.
Regardless, many theologians believe that Jesus spoke more about the reality of Hell than of Heaven. Evangelism should always begin with an affirmation of God’s love and desire that all should come to Him ( 1 Timothy 2:4, 2 Peter 3:9). However, unlike false teachers, who ignore sin and its consequences (ex. Joel Osteen), we must not be afraid to speak about the cost of paying for our own sins when called to do so.
