Faith vs. Science in a Secular Culture

Are they moving farther apart of closer together?

I received a typical response from a recent post regarding aspects of scientific inquiry that remain a mystery (Quantum Entanglements post here). This secular reader responded that, “Today is the era that the human intellect is the center of the universe either religiously or scientifically.” He continued to clarify his point that man’s knowledge has risen to such a degree that science has replaced any vestiges of religion. We no longer need a crutch like God to explain the universe and our place in it.

My response was…

It is not facts that separate our worldviews, but faith. You have faith in the science that is a product of natural man. I see man today, and our exclusive reliance on our intellect, as the same humanity that once believed maggots appeared spontaneously from rotting meat (Wikipedia). We are certainly advanced from that point, but far from being omniscient; we remain children as relates to the knowledge of the universe. From my vantage point of faith in an omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, supreme, supernatural Creator of the universe, I trust His wisdom, found in the Bible, over the prideful, sinful, arrogant and self-righteous that struggle, as I do, to live as best we can, day by day.

Again, what separates us is the difference in our foundational worldview. I hold to a Biblical Christian worldview on faith. Others view the world through the lens of man’s science. Neither position means the other is to be totally rejected. We need to advance in our scientific knowledge and understanding of the natural laws man operates under. However, to acknowledge the existence of a Creator is to accept the fact that a supreme being has wisdom which transcends human understanding. And, if that Creator God wrote a book, it behooves us to learn from it in those areas He chooses to enlighten us.

Convergence Rather than Separation

Finally, as “science” continues to plod forward, we should move toward conformity with the Lord. We should see the complexity and beauty of life as the artistic portrait painted by God.

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. – Genesis 1:1
