Hebrews 5:12–14 reminds us, “You have been Christians long enough to be teachers, but you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again.” Spiritual growth is crucial for the devoted Christ-follower; stagnation isn’t an option.
I recall a visit to Mickey Mantle’s Steakhouse in Oklahoma City, where the tempting menu featured mouth-watering tenderloin, filet mignon, and Angus ribeye. My wife would’ve thought I was unwell if I had asked for a glass of milk for dinner. Yet, how often do we see lifelong Christians still sipping spiritual milk when God offers a feast of deeper truths?
Just as my infant granddaughter thrives on her mother’s milk, we begin our faith journey needing basic nourishment. But we must eventually learn to feed ourselves solid food — through scripture study, holy reading, corporate worship, fasting, service, and prayer. Here’s the truth: staying on milk doesn’t just limit you; it limits your ability to guide others and build up the church.
Mature Christians don’t remain in their spiritual cribs. They step out of comfort zones, embrace growth, and explore God’s kingdom, becoming the teachers and mentors others need. Don’t be like the audience the writer of Hebrews addressed: “You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child” (Heb. 5:12b-13).
Put down the sippy cup and sit at the banquet table of Christ. There’s real food to be had there — meat that will strengthen you and those who rely on your spiritual maturity to thrive.
