Eisegesis vs. Exegesis…

The Bible through the lens of our unique personal worldviews.

Definitions

Eisegesis – Webster defines it as “the interpretation of a text (as of the Bible) by reading into it one’s own ideas.”

Exegesis – Webster defines it as “an explanation or critical interpretation of a text.”

From a reader of a past post …

“Now if it were only true that God actually wrote or at the very least dictated the Bible – and if we knew which version of the Bible was the legitimate one. Oh well, guess we’ll just have to continue muddling along with interpreting/exegeting and minimize the eisegesis.”

My Response…

I think there is truth in what you are offering. However, part of the translation differences comes from the range of word-for-word vs. concept-for-concept perspectives on God’s truth. I do agree that eisegesis is an issue, as we all have a sin nature, which can lead us astray. That reality goes all the way to the heart of whether we believe God wrote the Bible, or mankind did.

My view is that there are essential, core, and non-core beliefs contained in the Scripture (link below). Rather than throw the whole Book out because of the challenges for sinful mankind to understand some of the writings of the Creator of the universe, I think it better to decide what one’s core beliefs are and keep an open mind on the rest. From that perspective the critical points become clear and actionable (i.e., salvation and evangelism).

Conclusion

Sadly, we all fall to varying degrees toward eisegesis (interpreting the Bible through the lens of our preconceived worldview) rather than pure exegesis (submissive interpretation of what God is trying to tell us). However, that reality should not result in rejecting in total the only love letter God has written to mankind. Each Christian must make their own decision about what they believe to be true and keep an open mind about the rest. In the end, those decisions will determine our place in eternity.
