Do Americans trust the Church?

A statical overview by political affiliation and a comparison with other institutions.

Gallup has been tracking the level of trust Americans have in various institutions since 1973. They recently released results which showed, after three years of stagnation (between 31% and 32%), public trust in the Church has increased to 36%. As we review the numbers, it is important to note that the word “church” is not the Biblical Church which holds to traditional Christian theology, but the broader, multi-denominational and often syncretic church in general.

The highest confidence in the church was in 1975, recorded as 68%. Interestingly, there was a brief, renewed confidence in the church in 2001 (60%), immediately following 9/11.

Below is a chart from Gallup listing confidence levels in 2025.

Note the chart below, also from Gallup, broken down by political affiliation with 64% of Republicans as compared to 21% of Democrats and 30% of Independents.

God is in control, but it is encouraging to see some good news on the advancement of the Good News of Jesus Christ. It is also worth noting where Television News (11%), and Congress (6%) land on the list.
