Devotions vs. Apologetics

Where should Biblical Christians spend their time and energy?

it is always helpful to define terms so that further discussions are founded from common ground. Webster defines these two approaches to the study of Biblical Christian theology as follows.

Definitions

Devotional – “A religious exercise or practice other than the regular corporate worship of a congregation.”

Apologetics – “A branch of theology devoted to the defense of the divine origin and authority of Christianity.”

Why do Biblical Christians write on Social Media?

As one who has personally written nearly 1k articles over the last three years, I do ask myself this question periodically. Why invest in this exercise realizing that there is a cost in time and resources?

The answer can be split along the lines of Devotions and Apologetics. Devotionals are geared more toward the strengthening of believers, while apologetics are more targeted to convict the seeker. Clearly, the Lord calls us to do both, the first having more to do with sanctification, and the second toward eternal salvation.

One could easily say that salvation is more important than sanctification since, if the Holy Spirit resides in the heart of the believer, he/she will have eternity to grow in his theology, sitting at the feet of Jesus. However, the lost seeker who is drawn to faith but has not yet committed to a personal relationship with Christ is a more valuable target of attention.

However, apologetics has its severe limitations in convincing anyone that God is real and that Christ died for their sins. The Lord has a way of drawing seekers to His side using many different methods. Those methods include, but not at all limited to, attempts at arguing creation over evolution, God is love when He allowed the entrance of hate into mankind, etc. Further, devotions that attempt to capture the love of God and the breadth of His blessings can move seekers just as much as human-based attempts at attempting to prove the Bible we hold today is 99% of what God divinely inspired as the Author (as just one example of the challenges of applying the scientific method to faith-based beliefs).

Conclusion

Devotionals, Bible Studies, Sermons, Sunday School classes, Commentaries, Prayers, and Apologetics form a matrix of what the Lord uses to draw seekers and sanctify believers as we all prepare for eternity. As Paul so eloquently said as he began his defense of the gospel to the Corinthians and the Athenians….

1 Corinthians 9:21-23 – To those outside the law I became as one outside the law… that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.

Acts 17:22-24 – So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, ‘To the unknown god. ’What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man.

As Christians our calling is to share the Good News of Jesus Christ, regardless of the methods God chooses to employ during a divine appointment… even on social media.
