Church Offering Free PTSD Counseling To All VBS Volunteers

Is it worth the hassle?

Words of Wisdom from the Babylon Bee – Vacation Bible School can be a stressful time for both volunteers and church staff. All the decorating, games, food, songs, Bible stories, and crafts need to come together by volunteer coordination and execution … which can seem like herding cats.

But every year, somehow, it all comes together, helping out parents looking for a summer break in their “parenting responsibilities.” Is that all it’s about? Of course not. VBS is an opportunity for young kids to hear the truth of who Jesus Christ is and what He has done for them. Perhaps more significantly, it is a form of evangelism for parents who feel comfortable dropping their kids off at a church, but resistant to showing up as a family on Sunday morning. It is a way of subtly reminding parents what church has to offer their whole family. And the height of that attraction comes on the Sunday morning following VBS when parents are guilted into attending so they can raise their cell phones high, recording their baby mouthing lyrics while following the adults in the aisles waving their arms and bodies in practiced rhythm to the songs barely learned.

What’s the Point?

The point is that VBS is a rare opportunity to introduce lost kids to Jesus AND show the church as an attractive place for mom and dad to bring their families for worship on Sunday mornings. The stress is worth it if Christ is at the center of the program, for both kids and parents. Don’t squander this annual event by missing the opportunity to share the gospel with the little ones, and especially the big ones.
